Does anyone else find bodybuilders aesthetic and impressive in pictures but opposite in real life?

Overall I am blown away by some pictures but after seeing those same people in person I am not as impressed nor do I find it as aesthetically visual. Just photo magic (lighting, prep, etc.) versus how they normally look maybe?

What exercises have you added to your routine on recommendations from a bodybuilder?

In another thread on a Meadows video a user was posting all the tips and exercises he'd picked up from John. Got me thinking about other BBs or lifters who you've picked things up from.

A few examples off the top of my head:

Zottman curls - Rich Piana

Hack Squats - John Meadows

Zercher Squats - Jamie Lewis

Genetically modified bodybuilders

Just an interesting thought...

So in biology I was learning about genetically modified food and animals and I thought, "Fuuuck, if they can modify animals to grow faster, bigger they for sure tried modifying humans!"

My question is - do y'all think they are modifying bodybuilders/athletes to perform better?

Maybe that's why big ramy was able to grow so big in such a short period of time?

The Bodybuilder's Complete Drink Guide

beer

Let's face it, you're going to be tempted to indulge every now and again—it's only natural.

Going hard in the gym while keeping a sound diet is a lot of work, and there are worse things than wanting to unwind (a little) with friends and family. That said, it's hard to relax when you know you're sabotaging your lean physique. Playing the macro-counting game is a sure-fire way to take the fun out of a good time. Just remember: Moderation is key. Yes, you can still get a buzz without destroying all your hard work, but it'll be a lot easier if you make smart drinking choices. We're not promoting the sauce, but this comprehensive drink guide will help you curb the damage in enjoying a cold one or two (or three).

Beer

Brand Calories Carbs (g) ABV (%)
Bud Select 55 55 1.9 2.4
Beck's Premier Light 64 3.9 2.3
Miller64 64 2.4 2.8
Molson Canadian 67 67 2 3
Michelob Ultra 95 2.6 4.2

Amounts are per 12 oz.

There's good news, moderate beer consumption has been linked to decreasing heart disease and lowering the risk for hypertension. Again, the key is moderate consumption—meaning two drinks a day for men and one drink a day for women. For starters, not every beer is made the same way and most contain powerful antioxidants called phenols. Phenols are more commonly found in ales, so your tall boy can pack on the health benefits. That's only with moderate consumption, not chugging down several beers.

[RELATED1]

Ales: Left Hand Good Juju is an ale that's blended with exclusive herbs and spices, creating a fuller flavor. And, it's also got dash of ginger—a superfood that has been seen to alleviate post-workout inflammation and ease a sour stomach. It only has 131 calories, 12.1g of carbs, and a 4.5% alcohol content. A pale ale to add to the list is Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, which is made with hops and a slight orange blossom. Reap its phenol benefits at only 175 calories, 14.1g of carbs, and 5.6% alcohol content.

  • For those who are gluten-free, New Planet 3R Raspberry Ale is a solid choice. It's made with sorghum, corn, and raspberry puree malt. It's made with raspberries, so it gives you an antioxidant boost. It contains 160 calories, 11g of carbs, and has a 5% alcohol content.

Light beer: When you're looking to go a bit lighter (and cheaper), Bud Light might be your choice. It only contains 110 calories, 6.6g of carbs, and a 4.2% alcohol content.

Alcoholic cider: We haven't forgotten the cider fans: Magners Irish Cider Original  is our choice here. It has only 150 calories and 14g of carbs.

Stout: Associated with Irish car bombs, Guinness Draught surprisingly makes the healthy list. Why? Because it's phenol-rich. Macro-breakdown: 119 calories, 9.7g of carbs, and a 4% alcohol content.

Lager: We're going Dutch here. Heineken Lager is a classic beer. It clocks in at 110 calories, 8.5g of carbs, and a 4% alcohol intake. Plus, it's made with high standards in mind, using only water, hops, and yeast.

people drinking wine outside and toasting

Wine

Wine doesn't just taste great, it's good for you. Studies have shown that red wine beats white in health benefits due to the compound reservatrol. Reservatrol has been linked to reducing the risk for certain cancers, preventing age-related memory decline, inhibiting weight gain, and protecting your pearly whites.

For those who are white wine fans, stick with the drier whites like Rieslings of Sauvignon Blanks. They have their own health benefits. A study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that antioxidants in white wine are similar to that in olive oil—boosting heart function.

Brand/Type Calories Carbs (g) ABV (%)
Carlo Rossi White Zinfandel 85 7.5 8
Martini & Rossi Prosecco 105 5 10.5
Franzia Cabernet Sauvignon 117 5 12.5
Syrah 122 4 12.5

Amounts are per 5 oz.

Cocktails

Mixed drinks can easily sneak in the extra, unwanted calories, such as a Long Island Iced Tea can pack on a few hundred calories. The goal is to keep the drink simple, limiting what type of syrups and mixers you throw into it.

The simplest drink you can order is a vodka soda with lime: 1 shot of vodka, 4 shots of soda water, and 1-2 limes—containing roughly 75 calories and 0g of carbs.

Skip the margarita mix, and make your own—the added sugars from a mix will destroy your macro-game for the night. All you need: 2oz of tequila, 1 1/2oz lime juice, 1oz orange juice, 1 teaspoon of agave, and 1 lime wedge. Agave is a great sugar substitute that has only 21 calories and 5g of carbs in one teaspoon.

Make a 200-calorie Cosmo by subbing in club soda for liquor. The recipe: 2oz of citrus-flavored vodka, club soda, cranberry juice, and juice from a lime wedge.

Vodka

Brand Calories
Pendleton 96
Jack Daniel's 98
Bushmills 98
Jim Beam 100
Jameson 104

Amounts are per 1.5 oz. All contain zero carbs and 40% alcohol by volume.

Whiskey

Brand Calories ABV (%)
Skinnygirl Bare Naked 75 30
Smirnoff Sorbet Light 78 30
Monarch Citron 84 35
Ketel One 96 40
Absolut 96 40

Amounts are per 1.5 oz. All contain zero carbs.

Rum

Brand Calories ABV (%)
Monarch Pineapple 79 30
Malibu 81 30
Captain Morgan 86 35
Myers 0.4 40

Mixers

cranberry-juice-diuretic

The mixer really determines it all—calories and macros. Syrups, soda, and juices are all empty calories, which can make a negative impact on your hard-training muscles.

  • Lime juice: 20 calories and 7g of carbs
  • Club soda: 0 calories and 0g of carbs per 8oz
  • Diet cranberry juice: 5 calories and 2g of carbs per 8oz
  • Diet Lemon Lipton Iced Tea: 5 calories
  • Diet soda: 0 calories and 0g of carbs
  • Truvia (simple syrup substitute): 0 calories and 0g of carbs

The State of Bodybuilding

Hi everybody!

I know that our bodybuilding community is having a difficult moment with the tension between the IFBB International and the IFBB Pro, and I wanted to come here to hear from all of you what your concerns and thoughts are about the current situation with our sport.

I used to give State of the State speeches every year, but for the state of bodybuilding, I'd like to just listen to you.

I know very well that bodybuilding doesn't belong to any one federation or person. It belongs to the fans and the athletes because without the champions on the stage and the people in the audience, we have absolutely nothing.

As the promoter of Arnold Classics all over the world, I keep getting asked how I feel about this IFBB split.

The truth is, I just want our sport to succeed. I think infighting does nothing to help with that goal. We are best when we are moving forward together, no matter what federation we all come from - I myself competed in NABBA, AAU, and IFBB. I'd like nothing more than to unify the sport and end these turf wars.

You know my concerns. At the professional level, some bodybuilders look like they're starring in Junior 2, it seems the focus is on only size and not aesthetics, the art of posing is getting lost and not being judged outside the Arnold Classics, and an overdosage of drugs, and as a result, we have tremendous difficulty getting TV coverage and expanding our fan base. At the amateur level, I've heard from many athletes about restrictions on where and when they can compete and other bureaucratic red tape and a hardcore top-down approach.

So I want to hear your thoughts, concerns, and challenges. And I know many of you are athletes, so I'd like you to be as specific as possible.

Even though we are told we have to choose one federation or another, I prefer to keep the sport unified, and I certainly don't let anyone rush me into any decisions, especially with something this close to my heart.

I want to hear your take and I'm counting on your candid thoughts.

The 20-minute full-body HIIT workout to burn fat

Who says every (or, really, any) gym visit needs to be an hours-long slog? With high-intensity interval training, you can hit it hard and be done in just 20 minutes.

"This effective workout is designed to burn fat while building a lean, cut physique,” says Brynn Putnam, founder of NYC’s Refine Method, which specializes in HIIT. “By performing full-body exercises with challenging weights and minimal rest, you not only optimize your calorie burn during your workout, but boost your metabolism for hours after.”

Complete all five exercises for 60 seconds each, going for four rounds with minimal rest.

[RELATED1]

Side-step squat to press

Stand with feet together, holding a kettlebell goblet-style in both hands in front of your chest. Take a step to one side, then squat deeply. As you stand from the squat, press the kettlebell straight up overhead, as you also bring your foot back to center. Repeat the movement, stepping to the opposite side, and continue alternating for time.

Jumpback to pushup

Or, a burpee without the straight jump. Stand with your feet a bit wider than hip-width. Squat down, place your hands on the floor, and launch your feet back so you’re in plank position. Do a pushup. Jump your feet back around your arms, stand tall, and repeat for time.

[RELATED2]

Suitcase swings

Think of this one as a two-handed wide kettlebell swing. Stand with a KB in each hand, feet hip-width apart. Hinge your hips back as you would for a regular kettlebell swing, but instead of bringing the ‘bells between your legs, bring them along your sides. Pop your hips forward to stand, allowing the kettlebells to come between belly button- and sternum-height. Continue swinging for time.

Shuffle slam

This one combines side shuffles with medicine ball slams for a multi-dimensional plyometric move. Grab a slam ball or soft medicine ball in both hands. Take a shuffle step to one side, then raise the ball overhead, bending your knees and bracing your core as you slam the ball into the floor in front of you. Quickly scoop up the ball and repeat, shuffle-stepping to the other side. Repeat for time.

[RELATED3]

Treadmill tabata sprint

Hop on a treadmill and sprint all-out for 20 seconds, then hop onto the side rails for 10 seconds of rest; do it twice.

Bodybuilding Conditioning Question

I have a question as my bodybuilding knowledge doesn't go further then me enjoying lifting and general supplement knowledge. I wanted to know if someone can explain to me why lots of bodybuilders look better the day before their show rather then when they are on stage? Big ramy posted a picture in his hotel room and I feel his lower lats and legs were more defined then when stepped on stage. I see this a lot on bb instagrams when they post progress pics, what happens in the time between the day before they step on stage and when they actually show up?

Forget what you know about wellness resorts. Here's why BodyHoliday is the ultimate fit guy's vacation destination.

Mt. Gimmie hike overlooking the Pitons in St. Lucia

What does your dream vacation look like?

Do you want epic, full-throttle, life-affirming adventures that teeter on the edge of insanity? Or are you more of a zen traveler who wants to Down Dog your muscles into motion, learn how to sail, then mosey on over to an Ayurvedic dinner? (We promise that's a real thing.)

[RELATED1]

Why not both?

At BodyHoliday, St. Lucia’s privately owned, all-inclusive resort, you don’t have to choose. In fact, you can personalize your entire trip.

Pool at BodyHoliday resort in St. Lucia

Getting there

Depending upon where you're flying from, you can find nonstop flights to St. Lucia. Departing from New York's JFK Airport, it's a five-hour plane ride to the lush, little island (27 miles long, 14 wide) freckling the Caribbean Sea, along with the other Windward Islands (St. Vincent, Trinidad, Barbados) that make up the Lesser Antilles.

[RELATED2]

To get to BodyHoliday, you'll fly into Hewanorra International Airport. From there, take a helicopter ride ($175 per person, with a minimum of 4 people) over the pulsing jungle that blankets the majority of the island. (Think: Jurassic Park.) You'll escape the creeping heat and, over the course of 20 or so minutes, you'll soar past two of St. Lucia's geographic gems, the Pitons. The sister mountains (volcanic spires, actually) are popular hike sites and the name of the island's native beer (a lager likened to Corona but bottled small so you can really slug 'em back). Then it's just a quick taxi ride (~$45) to the resort. Afraid of heights? Arrange an hour and a half cab ride to BodyHoliday.

Pitons in St. Lucia

The resort

Look, we know resorts can be a little gimmicky and stuffy. Sometimes you're coerced into a fixed itinerary, and it can feel like you and the other visitors are tethered to a leash like a bunch of toddlers being corralled to your preprogrammed activities. Fortunately, that doesn't happen at this five-star luxury retreat.

There's an intimacy to BodyHoliday that's due, in part, to its small size. There are 155 rooms. Some look over the tropical gardens, others have sprawling views of the sunbathers and fishermen below. The Penthouse has a personal Turkish hammam (steam room), a mammoth bath tub fit for two, a balcony, and a Kinesis Gym (basically a fancy cable machine). It's luxe without being pretentious. The staff is friendly, eager, and efficient, welcoming you with a cool towel and beverage upon arrival at the resort, and tea every evening. There's even a pillow menu, so you can turn your room into a bona-fide sleep palace.

View out of room at BodyHoliday

Traveling alone has never been more appealing. This is a place that takes fun seriously. The resort's "bodyguards" serve as spirit-boosters and ice-breakers, flitting around to chat up a guest one minute, then starting up a dance-floor party the next. (It's basically an extrovert's dream job.) The resort has themed months, too—September Solos, Octoba Yoga, WellFit & SwimFit—which translate to plenty of opportunities to meet fellow travelers in classes. You can even befriend locals (enjoy a Piton, try spiced rum, devour a coconut) at the "Jump-Up" street party held every Friday in Rodney Bay, a quick cab ride from the resort. As you'd expect from the Caribbean, the atmosphere is laid-back.

[RELATED3]

Some standout spots include the sapphire-blue, nautical-themed Piano Bar, which is probably the ultimate setting to live out those James Bond aspirations (or at the very least transplant you to a more refined, relaxed state of mind). The bar stays open as late as you do, so you can sip on local fruit-infused martinis while an on-site pianist rumbles away on the baby grand. (Amy Winehouse reportedly sought refuge here and regularly played in the bar during her stay.) The restaurant Tao has mouthwatering Asian fusion options, of which we recommend the pork spare ribs with melon shots, just-reeled-in-fresh sushi, and passionfruit ice cream. And Cariblue Windows offers an ever-changing tasting menu (with wine pairings) that boasts local specialties like tuna tartare, marbled wagyu, and crusted salmon.

If you're on a specific nutrition plan (some people bring the keto diet on vacation), you can note your preferences and even speak with a nutritionist who will work with the chefs to customize your meals (for a supplementary cost). You can even get a nutrition and lifestyle consultation and a BodyStats Assessment to kickstart your body transformation.

[PQ]

What an inclusive package gets you at BodyHoliday

BodyHoliday separates itself from competing health and wellness resorts with its massive array of fitness classes and daily (inclusive) spa treatments. You're not dragging yourself to a sad little gym with a couple abused dumbbells and a wheezy treadmill. BodyHoliday emphasizes fitness and wellness at every turn.

The classes are a fit guy's dream. (The class schedule is available on your room's iPad, as well as a towering chalkboard at the entrance of the Pavillion.) Sweat through your tank-top with a spin class in the resort's treehouse. Flow your body through Vinyasa-style yoga. Take a bootcamp class on the beach. Try your hand at water skiing, wake boarding, kayaking, snorkeling, paddle boarding, or windsurfing. With more than 50 sports and activities to choose from, you can do your favorite disciplines or learn something completely new, all without leaving the resort.

Yoga class at BodyHoliday

The wellness center at which you'll receive treatments is perched above the rest of the resort, making for epic sunset views over the water. If you can imagine a spa treatment, they have it: full-body massages, scrubs, wraps, facials, and even Thalasso therapy, in which you submerge your body in a seawater pool while water jets pummel your muscles into submission. There are additional treatments you can pay extra for, including acupuncture, Thai massage, and hypnotherapy.

After, you can take a dip in one of the resort's infinity pools, lounge in a hammock, or swim in the bay. You have free reign over your daily itinerary, whether that means sleeping in and sprawling out on a water trampoline (yes, water trampolines exist) or sweating through a day's worth of fitness. After all: What's the point of hyper-scheduling your vacation when your life is already hyper-scheduled?

BodyHoliday has found the sweet spot for travelers who want more from a vacation. It's why 40% of the visitors return, according to BodyHoliday's marketing manager Armin Asceric. Hence the resort's tagline: “Give us your body for a week and we’ll give you back your mind.”

Inclusive rates at BodyHoliday start at $556/person/night.

BodyHoliday's Adventure Program

The resort's crown jewel is arguably its newly imagined Adventure Program. Originally launched in 1992, when health and fitness destinations just started to gain traction, the program is the perfect way to explore the island and get a taste for all the outdoor excursions St. Lucia has to offer.

Click here for the full review on BodyHoliday's exciting, new Adventure Program.

Zach Galifianakis’ body transformation: 11 photos of the actor's new, lean look

Zach Galifianakis

Zach Galifianakis is one of the funniest actors in Hollywood.

Galifianakis was nominated for Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series at the 2017 Emmy Awards for his roles on Baskets—on which he plays twin brothers—and that’s where he really turned some heads.

[RELATED1]

While Galifianakis hasn’t been massively overweight or obese during his career, his comedic persona definitely leaned more toward the "dad bod" style, or like Chris Pratt in his pre-Guardians of the Galaxy days, when Pratt played the lovable, plump Andy Dwyer on Parks and Recreation. (See Pratt’s amazing body transformation and 16 other extreme Hollywood celebrity transformations here.)

Galifianakis got his first television credit way back in 1996, but his true breakout came in The Hangover film trilogy as Alan, the socially awkward foil to Bradley Cooper’s Phil and Ed Helms’ Stu.

But now, Galifianakis is looking much trimmer and leaner compared to his Hangover days.

[RELATED2]

Galifianakis previously got some attention for dropping weight back in 2016, too. While appearing on Conan in January of that year, Galifianakis was asked about his weight loss, and responded with a joke, of course: “I’ve had a lot of plastic surgery,” the comedian said.

Since The Hangover, Galifianakis has appeared in projects as varied as The Muppets, It’s Kind of a Funny Story, Up in the Air, the Academy Award-winning Birdman, The Lego Batman Movie, and A Wrinkle in Time, but he’s really gotten raves for his performance on the FX television series Baskets, hence the Emmy nomination.

[RELATED3]

Here are 11 looks at Galifianakis’ new look from the Emmy Awards and other recent appearances.

David Harbour underwent an intense body transformation to become a 'big, demon monster' for 'Hellboy'

David Harbour's Extreme 'Hellboy' Body Transformation and Workout Routine

Every actor knows that taking on a new role often doesn't just require mental preparation, but a total-body physical transformation, too—and in some cases, those transformations are extreme.

Tom Hardy bulked up like crazy to play Bane. Mark Wahlberg gained more than a few pounds for Deepwater Horizon. Christian Bale gained and lost...and gained again. Point is, there's no shortage of Hollywood heavyweights willing to put their bodies on the line to get camera-worthy.

And now, thanks to an intense fitness regimen and some help from celebrity trainer Don Saladino, we can add David Harbour to our list of extreme celebrity fitness transformations.

[RELATED1]

The Stranger Things actor had to go from flabby to fearsomely jacked to succesfully achieve the look of an occult-battling demonic hero in the new Hellboy reboot.

And if the before-and-after shots are anything to measure against, the guy has clearly been putting in the work at the gym:

For a behind-the-scenes look at Harbour's workouts with trainer Don Saladino, check out the video below:

Hellboy, directed by Neil Marshall and starring Harbour, Milla Jovovich, and Ian McShane, will hit theaters on Jan. 11, 2019.

You will be required to:

The best bodyweight legs workout ever

Jump Squats

Without weights, most trainers would tell you to do endless reps of bodyweight squats and lunges for legs. Fortunately, Men's Fitness contributor Ben Bruno isn’t one of those trainers. Bruno has one of the most creative—and, perhaps, devious—minds in fitness, and he’s designed a workout that may bring tears to your eyes while it adds muscle to your thighs. We can’t promise you’ll enjoy this routine, but we can assure you that it’s not like any you’ve done before.

[RELATED1]

How it works

The muscles of the legs are stubborn. They carry you around everywhere, so it takes more than bodyweight squats to convince them they need to get stronger. This workout brings the pain with moves that ask the legs to work independently or without the benefit of locking the knees out (which lets them rest momentarily during a set). Correcting imbalances in your legs and keeping tension on them for prolonged periods will burn like hell, but you’ll be amazed you could get such results without putting a barbell on your back, or doing the same old exercises that didn’t work before.

[RELATED2]

Directions

Perform the exercise pairs (marked A and B) as alternating sets. So you’ll do a set of A, rest, then a set of B, rest again, and continue for all the prescribed sets.

7 ways Steelers WR Martavis Bryant trained and transformed his body for the 2017 NFL season

Martavis Bryant, Steelers WR, NFL player

Steelers wide receiver Martavis Bryant is back and stronger than ever.

After missing the entire 2016 season due to suspension, Bryant is prepared to give Pittsburgh another explosive deep threat in the passing game alongside superstar Antonio Brown (who showed off 15 of his best workouts on social media).

[RELATED1]

The 6'4”, 211-lb Bryant had a breakout season in 2015, making 50 catches for 765 yards, and six touchdowns—along with an absolutely incredible touchdown that included a flip against the Bengals in the playoffs—but he had to stay away from the Steelers while serving his suspension in 2016.

Even though Bryant had a rude awakening due to the ban, he used it as motivation to get even better. Bryant spoke with ESPN about his return this season, and described the body transformation he went through while working out away from the team.

[RELATED2]

Bryant worked out so much during his suspension—perhaps channeling ageless teammate and workout warrior James Harrison—that he ended up adding too much muscle, bulking up to around 233lbs. So when he got back, Bryant slimmed down to 220lbs and just 5% body fat.

Bryant changed his diet: cutting out fast food, eating steak and sweet potatoes, and fueling his workouts with milk and chocolate protein mix. His favorite go-to workouts during this time were squats and weighted jumps.

[RELATED3]

"It was like, all right, if we're going to do this, we have to commit ourselves to it," Bryant said to ESPN. "It worked out great. I just saw immediate results, so I kept going."

Now, Bryant is hoping to pick up where he left off.

Here are seven ways Bryant got ready for the 2017 season.

Do you have many stretch marks from bodybuilding? How do you feel about them?

I've always had some on my biceps and in the pec/shoulder tie in, recently the latter have really gotten more prominent. Also have some significant ones on my hamstrings which I can't really see for obvious reasons but can easily notice by touch as they are different to feel than the rest of my skin.

I honestly like them, I find them a sign of the mass I've put on since I've begun training seriously (about 40 lbs in the last 3 years).

What 4 specific body fat percentage ranges look like on men

There are a lot of numbers to consider in your training targets: reps, sets, miles, heart rate, lbs. But if body fat isn’t on that list, it’s time to add it.

"Body fat percentage is what portion of your overall body composition is fat and what portion is lean mass. While body mass index (BMI) is a fine measurement for the average person, if you have a lot of muscle, body fat percentage is a better tool to assess your goals by since most guys’ goal is to trim fat," says ACSM Health Fitness Instructor Jim White, R.D., owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios in Virginia Beach.

According to the American Council on Exercise, the average body fat for a guy is 18 to 24%. 15 to 17% puts you in the fitness category, while 6 to 13% is athlete status. But what’s the real difference among the numbers?

[RELATED1]

Guys below 20% typically have muscle definition of some sort. As the numbers drop, that definition increases. And it’s mostly in the abs, since men generally tend to accumulate the most fat in their stomach.

But body fat distribution is also heavily influenced by genetics, explains Christopher Jordan, C.S.C.S., Director of Exercise Physiology at the Johnson & Johnson Human Performance Institute and creator of the 7-Minute Workout. That means if you and your friend shed the same amount of body fat, he may secure two more ab outlines, while your biceps and triceps carve deeper (hey, there are worse fates). “Look at your father and grandfather—that’ll give you an indication of your genetic body fat distribution pattern,” he adds.

The other difference is your weight. If two guys are 200 pounds with 10% body fat, they both have 20 pounds of fat. But while the numbers are the same, 180 pounds of lean muscle looks significantly different on a guy who’s 5’8” than one who is 6’3”. The former will be lean, but a thicker mass of muscle, while the latter probably looks skinnier, explains personal trainer and strength coach Pete McCall, C.S.C.S., instructor at Equinox in San Diego.

[RELATED2]

You need a certain amount of essential fat—3%—which is found in the vital organs and is essential for normal functioning in a guy, Jordan explains. “Consequently, the minimum healthy percent body fat a man can achieve is around 3%, typically seen in endurance athletes, but also bodybuilders on competition day.” If that sounds ridiculously unachievable, don’t freak out—all our experts agree somewhere in 10 to 15% is the most realistic for looking cut. But, decide for yourself. Click through the following slides to see visuals and read exactly what it looks like to have 5-8% body fat, 9-13% body fat, 14-17% body fat, and 18-20% body fat. Then, on the last slide, find out how to achieve each one.

7 ways to shred body fat in 7 days

Admire those ridiculously ripped guys from The Expendables? Here’s a secret that’ll come as both a relief and a letdown: Physiques like those of Stallone and crew have the life expectancy of a mayfly—a day or two after the shoot.

We’re not saying it’s CGI or Photoshop that’s responsible for creating these onscreen bodies. Rather, it’s a secret, weeklong get-shredded strategy that separates people who make their living with their bodies from guys like us who just want to eat popcorn and watch them dodge bullets. The movie stars, the underwear models, the pro bodybuilders—they don’t look like that all the time. They can’t. But when it’s go time, they’re ready with Hollywood’s biggest get-shredded secret.

Thing is, there’s no reason you shouldn’t be in on the secret, too. The Ultimate Seated Full-body Workout

Seated Dumbbell Lateral Raise
Ian Spanier

People with injuries and disabilities are often sedentary, believing that their limitations prevent them from getting a good workout. Truth is, you don't need to be at 100% to reap the rewards of an intense training session at the gym. In fact, you can even get in a hardcore, muscle-blasting workout without ever being on your feet. All you need to do is take a seat.

[RELATED1]

Along with improving flexibility, strength, and balance, seated exercise takes the pressure off lower extremities during heavy lifts while targeting the muscles that are strong enough to carry the load. Whatever your setback—a leg injury, bad back, foot pain—it's not an excuse to call it quits with the iron. You can still stay in the game by parking it with these highly effective exercises that can all be performed while seated.

So if you need to get off your feet for a few training sessions while your body is healing, give this seated workout a go to stay in optimal shape and keep those muscles firing on all cylinders.

What could casual gymgoers learn from bodybuilders?

I go to the gym mostly for health and aesthetics and was curious what you guys would recommend for the average intermediate guy like me to improve his results. I've heard that bodybuilders pyramid up and down from a single top set in the midlde, curious why that is. Also Kali Muscle on Youtube said bbers use more 15-10 rep sets, and says guys using and not using should both use higher rep sets because it damages the muscle more than mid or low rep ranges at heavier weight.
