What were your reasons for getting into bodybuilding?

I feel like this could be a great discussion to start. It seems to me that there’s many bodybuilders and lifters who got into bodybuilding due to insecurities and wanting to be more intimidating. I know for me, I largely got into bodybuilding because I was a tiny 120lb cross country runner and I hated being small. I wanted to be big and have people notice. I wanted to be intimidating, even though i’d rather not admit it. Curious as to what everyone else’s motives were for picking up he dumbbells.

5 Reasons to Work Out that Have Nothing to Do With a Bikini Body

Stop selling fitness through the promise of a bikini body, and instead be good to your body, feel strong and empowered, and to be grateful for what our bodies can do.

In 2015 I ran my first half marathon. I went through the literal blood, sweat, and tears that one does in such a test of willpower, and when I came out the other side, absolutely amazed at what I had just been through, I knew that the power of fitness was something I needed to share.

The Brutal '5 Minutes of Hell' Test to Challenge Your Upper Body

Anybody's gym have these new clips?

https://www.fourteenacre.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/securing-clips-wm.jpg

My gym switched the normal clips off the cable station a couple days ago to the ones on the left with the screw where if you want to switch handles you have to twist it off. Problem is I can't fucking twist it, it's like someone took a wrench to every single one of the new clips. I wanted to switch handles and tried every single one and none of them would budge, weak grip or superglue?

Are there any prominent vegan bodybuilders who didnt decide to go vegan later on?

Being a vegetarian myself I have always found it quite difficult to progress, this may or may not be related to diet or my massive amount of inconsistency. I have to wonder when those memes float around facebook about some vegan bodybuilder "breaking stereotypes", if theyre actually being truthful.

From most of what I've gathered it seems like people opted to go vegan after achieving a ripped physique. I don't know if I have ever heard of anyone who got huge on a strictly vegan diet, however, I would definitely like to know.

Edit: Not trying to bring in the specifics of lifting on alternative diets or any associated merits, primarily curious on whether there are any known and prominent bodybuilders who were vegan their entire career rather than opting to take up that lifestyle after already being in the game for years.

Stuntwoman JoJo Batten's Go-to Lower-Body Workout

Stuntwoman JoJo Batten
Simon Howard

Performing stunts is serious work, and it takes a certain type of person to be comfortable taking on scenes that involve risky maneuvers and taxing choreography. But Joanne "JoJo" Batten, who's been a stuntwoman for over a decade, wouldn't trade her job for any other. At 38, she's in incredible shape, and recently got a successful start in bodybuilding without the help of a coach or making too many tweaks to her training routine.

“This year I entered my first bodybuilding competition at the UKBFF Zack Khan Classic and won the masters bikini fitness category, which is for women over 35,"she told M&F. "I coached and prepped myself for the show, since I felt I had enough experience and the self-motivation to achieve the look I wanted. I kept my prep as simple and as healthy as possible. My day-to-day training didn’t change too much. The changes to my diet and cardio made the big difference. Six weeks out, I started doing fasted cardio each morning in the form of a low-intensity, steady-state (LISS) walk for 40 minutes and gradually tapered my calories and carbs down over the final few weeks.”

As far as training, her philosophy is to get it done, no matter how hectic your schedule gets.

“It’s all too easy to say you don’t have time to fit everything in. But in this game you have to master a lot of skills and work hard," she says. "I’m always against the clock, but I still find time to train. My weekly training split is simple and time-efficient. (See below.) My on- and off-season training doesn’t really change at all. It’s the diet and cardio that alter.”

In the weekly split below, you'll see active recovery show up on Fridays and Sundays. That's when Batten finds time for her other fitness-centric pastimes.

“I like to take walks, either hiking in the countryside or exploring the city. I’m also still a keen dancer, and I take classes whenever I can. I’m a qualified yoga teacher, but I don’t always get to spend as much time on it as I would like, so weekends are a great chance to get in full recovery sessions. My body needs to be able to perform at its peak at all times, so I need to take care and maintain it with regular deep-tissue sports massage and physio.”

JoJo's Weekly Training Split

  • Monday: Upper-body pull
  • Tuesday: Lower body (quad dominant)
  • Wednesday: Upper-body push
  • Thursday: Lower body (posterior chain)
  • Friday: Active recovery
  • Saturday: Total lower body
  • Sunday: Active recovery

Perform the workout below when you want to work your lower body’s posterior chain (including glutes and hamstrings).

Body Building w/ Crohn’s Disease

A huge part of body building is a proper diet. Missing 2 and a half feet of intestine, frequent nausea attacks (not to mention the fatigue), and a nasty sensitivity to fiber - I find myself pretty limited in what I can take in.

For example: The Routine that Johnson used for his most recent film calls for 7 meals.... Shit, I have trouble getting down 2 or even 3!

Has anyone here with Crohn’s Disease who has their immune system treated regularly managed to attain the body they were aiming for? I’d love any wisdom that you could impart to start me on your path!

I’m 6”1 at 195 so gaining isn’t so much an issue as is maintaining the dietary and physical demands of certain routines. My biggest obstacles on this path are fatigue, nausea, and body aches.
