/r/Bodybuilding 2016 Survey/Census RESULTS

I'm happy to say the 2016 /r/BB survey/census was a great success! With 3290 results, I was able to amass what I think is a fairly accurate portrait of our users. Apologies for waiting so long to post the results, I was swamped with work/finals and didn't have the time to put it together until today. I'm not statistician so take my conclusions with a grain of salt.

I want to thank each of you who took the time to fill out the survey, those of you who posted suggestions in the thread and the mods for stickying the thread!

THE RESULTS

Things to Note

  • As far as demographics go, not much surprising here. /r/BB skews heavily towards young, Caucasian males with a majority of Americans.

  • Large amount of students, probably helped by the fact that /r/BB is a fairly young sub.

  • As a whole, /r/BB looks to be pretty lean with over half the sub lying between 11-17% bodyfat.

  • Over 40% of our userbase has managed to find a partner so maybe we aren't as autistic as we think.

  • As far as training age goes, /r/BB has fair amount of experience. Over half of the sub has been training for at least 2 years, with a substantial 16% clearing the 5 year mark. Curious to see how these numbers would compare to a sub like /r/powerlifting.

  • Over half the sub squats less than 3 plates, with an additional 7 percent not squatting at all.

  • /r/BBs bench numbers are surprisingly close to the squat numbers, with most of the sub benching around 2 plates and change, while squatting around 3 plates.

  • Most of /r/BB deadlifts in the high 300s, low 400s range. Ten percent of the sub doesn't deadlift.

  • Median Squat is 315-337.5, Bench is 225-247.5, Deadlift is 382.5 - 405

  • Overall, the S/B/D numbers are normal for a bodybuilding sub, who care about legs anyway

  • Routines were fairly well-split with PPL being the most common. Surprised by the number of those doing bro-splits as this sub loves 2x frequency routines.

  • Only half the sub counts calories, which was far less than I expected.

  • The sub is full of bros that love to bench

  • I suck at making graphs

Things for Next Year

  • Metric units will be included. Apologies to my non-American brethren. Google forms doesn't have a convenient way to convert values so I would have had to individually convert and type each value for each option in any question that had units.

  • More countries/ethnicities. I tried to keep the census portion of the survey as similar to the way the US conducts their census, but that has its limitations. Since almost a third of our user base is from outside the US it would make sense to be a little bit more specific.

  • More training years; the number of options for training years was overly simplified and having more options would likely give more meaningful data.

  • Please suggest any additional questions you think should be included in the next survey! This one was pretty short as there aren't too many questions to ask regarding bodybuilding, so your suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

If anyone would like the raw data from the survey, PM me your email and I will send you the responses.
